The Links at Fancourt Golf Club, George

Garden Route

The Links at Fancourt is an awe-inspiring example of magnificent design and golf-course construction, about which designer Gary Player says, “Links golf is how the game originated and at The Links we take golfers back to the roots of golf — and they can play a ‘British Open’ all of their own!” The Links is without doubt the most impressive piece of golf design and construction ever in South Africa. When playing this amazing course, it is difficult to believe that one is not in Scotland or Ireland, until, that is, one notices the imposing Outeniqua mountain range that rises impressively in the background. The Links was the host venue for the 2003 Presidents Cup and 2005 Women’s World Cup of Golf.

Although a coastal venue, Montagu is a serenely beautiful parkland course, the direction of play clearly signaled by its tree lines, knife edge manicuring and starkly visible bunkering. A great part of its allure is its user-friendliness: a variety of tees make it widely accessible and the rough isn’t overly difficult.

The Golf Course is a Links layout where veld grasses line the lush fairways and greens. The elements, predominantly the wind, play a role in the defenses of the course; the course being a coastal golf course. However you will find generous fairways off the tees but in the spirit of the course these are well bunkered to penalize any stray or ill-considered drives.
